What is a Martingale Collar?

Martingale collars are also known as “Greyhound Collars”, “Humane Choke Collars”, and “Limited-Slip Choke Collars”. The Martingale Dog Collar was designed for Sight hounds (such as Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Borzoi, Saluki, etc) because their necks are larger than their head which allows them to slip out of traditional side-release dog collars. Martingale collars have gained popularity as training collars with other breeds in the recent past because trainers prefer the limited choke aspects.
How does a Martingale Collar work?
First, look at your collar. There are 2 loops, the smaller loop—the “Control Loop”—is where the D-ring is located. The second loop is the adjustable part of the collar, which allows you to tighten or loosen the collar to make it fit your dog correctly.
Slip your martingale collar over the dog’s head. Adjust the larger loop to fit around your dog’s neck. When you pull up on the D-ring, the control loop should close. The two pieces of hardware on each side of the control loop should be a minimum of two inches apart when the control loop is tightened. These two pieces of hardware should NEVER touch. If they touch, your collar is too loose. You should be able to get two fingers between the two pieces of hardware on the control loop.
